Mary Skinner Student Award


The Tennessee Association of Museums is happy to announce the Mary Skinner Student Award for the 2026 TAM conference, “Solidarity”.

March 11-13, 2026, at Discovery Park of America in Union City, TN.

To apply for award, you must email Debbie Shaw, TAM State Coordinator, at tnmuseums@gmail.com.  Write "Mary Skinner Award" in the subject line of the email.  She will make sure you have all necessary information to proceed.  

DEADLINE: January 30, 2026 

Former TAM board member, Mary Skinner, kindly raised funds for this one-time cash award opportunity for students (undergraduate, graduate, doctorate) to present their research and network with the Tennessee’s museum community. We encourage a variety of fields of research, but an emphasis will be placed on Tennessee museum projects and/or Tennessee and America 250th content.

Eligible participants and projects:

  • Must be an active Tennessee Association of Museums member. To join, click here.
  • Must be a Tennessee resident or attending a Tennessee college or university.
  • Research completed within the last two academic years.

Eligible applications will include:

  • Resume
  • Brief 1 page project description and findings
  • 1 letter of recommendation from a professor or supervisor

DEADLINE: All materials and videos must be received by January 30, 2026 (posters can be brought day of presentation)

Options for presentation:

In-Person Attendance

Attend the TAM conference in Union City and present your project during the Student Project Break on Thursday, March 12 at 9:30-10:00 am. 

We suggest a poster or mini display format for the presentation.  


Guidelines for Poster

  • No larger than 36" x 48"
  • Mounting supplies will not be provided.  Presenters need to bring their own supplies.  (TAM will provide easels upon request)
  • Presenter is responsible for getting the poster to the conference.  It may be shipped in advance but the presenter is responsible for cost of shipping.  Contact Debbie Shaw at tnmuseums@gmail.com for shipping info or options.
  • Students attending will be responsible for their own travel, lodging, and incidentals.
  • All meals, site visits and evening events are included in the conference fee.  If you are only coming in for the presentation, you do not need to pay any fee to attend the student session.

Video Option

Video Requirements

  • Keep video to less than 5 minutes in length.
  • Record your video in a horizontal format. If using a cellphone, be sure to turn it sideways to record.
  • MP4 video file format is preferable.

Recording Instructions

  • Any recording device can be used: computer webcam, cellphone, video camera, etc.
  • Hold recording device as stable as possible. For increased stability, place device on a flat surface or use a tripod, step away from device, and then begin speaking.
  • Speak clearly and slowly, and if possible, record in a quiet, well-lit place.

Video content: Keep these questions in mind when recording your video!

  • Introduction: First and last name
  • If you are a student: Name and location of school you attend; your year (senior, junior, etc.); your major/minor; name and location of institution that hosted your internship; and brief naming of your project. EXAMPLE: "Hi! My name is Chelsea Zhou, and I'm a senior at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville studying Archaeology. In the fall of 2023, I interned for the McClung Museum of Natural History & Culture in Knoxville, TN, and I focused on cataloging the museum's projectile point collection."
  • Describe your project/internship: What was the focus of your project/internship? What work did you do? (If applicable) With which museum department and which museum staff did you work?
  • Why were you interested in doing this project/internship?
  • What new skills did you learn?
  • Anything about the project/internship surprise you?
  • What was the most rewarding part of the project/internship for you?
  • How might this project/internships impact your future? Do you want to pursue a career in museums?

  • When your recording is complete, please email it, along with your resume, letter of reccommendation and project description,  to Debbie Shaw at tnmuseums@gmail.com.
