SALARY RANGE GRADE H: $25.20/hr ($52,412/yr) - $30.71/hr ($63,976/yr)
JOB SUMMARY:
The Director of the Legends of Music Museum provides the day to day leadership, administration, and public face of the museum. The Director works collaboratively with the Legends of Music Museum Board on exhibit development, long range planning, curation, educational programming, and community engagement, while operating within City policies, approved budgets, and the direction of the Director of Public Venues and Events. The position is responsible for protecting and interpreting the museum's collections, delivering a strong visitor experience, increasing attendance, expanding the museum's visibility, and building sustainable financial and community support.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Museum leadership. Manage daily operations of the entire museum and carry out annual priorities, policies, and procedures consistent with City requirements and the museum's mission. Lead the scheduling, and facility bookings located in the Basement Theater.
- Board collaboration. Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Legends of Music Museum Board and work with the Board on exhibits, collections, programs, partnerships, and long range planning.
- Exhibits and collections. Research, curate, install, rotate, and maintain exhibits; oversee the documentation, care, storage, security, and loan of museum collections in accordance with professional standards.
- Attendance and visitor experience. Develop strategies to increase attendance, repeat visitation, tours, school participation, and community use; monitor visitor feedback and results.
- Marketing and tourism. Work closely with Visit Jackson and City communications staff to promote the museum through tourism campaigns, digital content, media outreach, group travel, and partnerships.
- Programs and events. Plan educational programs, performances, lectures, community events, traveling exhibits, and other experiences that support the museum's mission.
- Fundraising. Pursue grants, donations, sponsorships, memberships, and in kind support in coordination with City leadership and the Board.
- Budget and personnel. Prepare and manage the museum budget and supervise assigned employees, interns, volunteers, and contractors.
- Community relations. Build relationships with musicians, artists, educators, tourism partners, cultural organizations, sponsors, and community groups; represent the museum at public events and in the media.
- Reporting and facilities. Report on attendance, revenue, programs, fundraising, and annual goals, and coordinate with City departments on maintenance, safety, accessibility, security, and technology.
- Other duties. Perform related duties and special projects as assigned by the Director of Public Venues and Events.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Arts Administration, Museum Studies, Public Administration, Business, History, Theatre, Tourism, or a related field.
- Five or more years of progressively responsible leadership experience in museums, performing arts centers, cultural organizations, tourism, nonprofit management, or a closely related field.
- Experience managing budgets and personnel.
- Demonstrated success in fundraising and sponsorship development.
- Strong public speaking, written communication, and community relations skills.
- Experience coordinating events, exhibits, and educational initiatives.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Knowledge of museum collections, performing arts, music history, or cultural tourism.
- Experience with collections management systems, exhibit design, or interpretive planning.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
- Knowledge of accepted museum practices involving collections, exhibits, and interpretation.
- Strong leadership, organization, project management, problem solving, and decision making skills.
- Ability to work effectively with the Museum Board, City leadership, employees, volunteers, donors, artists, and community partners.
- Skill in budgeting, fundraising, grant writing, marketing, tourism promotion, and performance reporting.
- Ability to create accurate, engaging, and accessible visitor experiences.
- Proficiency with standard office, presentation, database, ticketing, and digital communication tools.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed in museum, office, collections storage, event, and community settings. The position requires periodic evening, weekend, and holiday work and occasional travel. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT
- Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record, if required for assigned duties.
- Successful completion of any pre employment screening required by the City of Jackson.
