The fresh mix of two- and three-dimensional works created within the last two years encompasses a wide variety of media such as oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, pencils, mixed media, photography, fine crafts, beadwork, iron sculpture, stone sculpture, clay, wood-carving, ceramics, jewelry, and more from local artists who are all members of the Arts & Culture Alliance.

Many of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition.

The Knoxville Museum of Art presents Michael Light: 100 SUNS, January 18 through June 1, 2008, which documents the destructive force unleashed during nuclear tests conducted by the United States following World War II.  The photographs are both terrifying and beautiful at the same time.

The Knoxville Museum of Art offers a big exhibition of small works with its Size Matters: XS – Recent Small-Scale Paintings from March 28 – August 24, 2008.

The exhibition includes 42 works by some of America’s most important painters including Thordis Adalsteinsdottir, Justin Allen, and Francis Al˙s.

The miniature proportions of the works in Size Matters: XS represent a new interest among contemporary artists in exploring the expressive possibilities of small-scale painting. Abstraction, figuration, photo-realism, and caricature are just a few of the art historical genres reinterpreted by artists in the exhibition.

Quilts on display will combine both contemporary and one-of-a-kind designs, some made from antique Japanese fabrics. Traditional American patterns with Japanese influence add flavor to the display. Romancing the Acropolis:  Prints from the Benaki Museum, Athens, Greece

April 29-July 26, 2008

Greece has always been considered a land of beauty and mystery. With this new exhibition of 18th and 19th century views of the Acropolis, the Parthenon begins a partnership with the Benaki Museum of Athens.  The Benaki is the oldest private museum in Greece and this exhibit of prints draws on its encyclopedic collection of landscapes of the Acropolis and surrounding vistas.  Dr. Fani-Maria Tsigakou, the Benaki’s Curator of Prints and Drawings, has personally selected the 40 images that will travel to Nashville.  Many of these prints focus on the Parthenon and the Acropolis, making the exhibit a perfect match for our galleries. The prints originate from European artists who included Athens in their Grand Tour and whose interest in classical archeology and Romanticism informed their subject matter. They date from 1762 to 1877 and range from delicate engravings to richly colored lithographs.  The centerpiece is a scroll, 120” long and 12” high, which shows a panoramic view of the city in 1841.

An opening reception and lecture by Dr. Tsigakou will take place at the Parthenon on Tuesday, April 29 from 6-8 p.m. Sponsored by The Conservancy for the Parthenon and Centennial Park, this reception and lecture are free and open to the public, but reservations are required.

The Parthenon is open 9:00-4:30, Tuesday –Saturday.  Admission is $5.00 for adults and $2.50 for seniors 62 and over and children 4-17.  Children under 4 are free.

Your House, My House: Take a fantastic journey into the homes of people around the world. See large houses, portable houses, small houses, apartments, houseboats and many other types of houses. In the “My House” area, step inside three model homes: a Mongolian herder’s ger, an m’bure from the tropics of Fiji and a stilt house from a Malaysian fishing village. Fun activities in the house settings help children make connections between what happens in their own homes and what happens in these houses. “Houses, Houses Everywhere” shows that houses with similarities can be found scattered all over the globe. In the “Design Center” visitors design houses by putting house parts together on a computer. In “Build Your Own” children build tabletop houses from materials provided and also a timber house.
